"I Choose to Be..."
(pre-K - 6th grade)
all ages are invited to participate in any lessons and activities

The intention of this lesson is to understand that no matter what situation we find ourselves in, we can be who we want to be.
"Jesus Calls His Disciples"

Luke 5:1-11

Story Focus
Jesus chose his friends based on the wonderful qualities they had. We, too, can choose to let our best selves shine.

Metaphysical Interpretation
Understanding that each man Jesus chose represents a quality that we all possess. When we choose to express these qualities, we are choosing to live from our Christ-self. This story shows us the importance of choice. As each man "heard" what Jesus was saying, they choose to follow their inner Christ voice. We, too, must do this because once our spiritual faculties are awakened we must make a conscious choice to use them in the highest way. When the men did as Jesus instructed, they prospered. Jesus first chose Peter and Andrew, representing faith and strength. When we put our faith in the guidance of our inner Christ we are strengthened and more ideas are available to us (fish) and we prosper. As Jesus traveled he recognized the gifts within the people he encounter, choosing them by their inner qualities, not by who they were on the outside. When we tap into those same inner qualities, the whole world opens up to us.

I Am A Good Friend
The purpose of this activity is to explore the qualities that make me a good friend.

Supplies Needed
Bubble wrap (optional), paper & paints, fish cutouts or stickers

Share
We heard in our story about how Jesus gathered his friends together and asked them to join him on his journey.

Ask
  • What are some things your friends have invited you to do with them?
  • What are the qualities of a good friend?
  • Share some of our 12 Powers (faith, love, strength, wisdom, power, imagination, understanding, will, order, zeal, release and life) and invite the children to consider how their friends express these qualities. (You may need to explain how some of the powers show up in people so the younger children can identify them.)

action

•    Show the children how to press the bubble wrap into the paints and then press onto their paper, creating a design that represents the ocean and/or water. Use multiple layers and colors to create the effect you want.
•    Then, apply the fish to the water design.
•    When dry, write a different quality of friendship on each of the fish to remind us of how to be a good friend.
